Service Forum for Lennox HVAC Owners and Servicers. Lennox HM30 heat problems Author Topic 3 Posts Posted -: 8:13:27 PM This is a follow up to an earlier post about this unit. Since then I have noticed some changes. If I leave the thermostat on 70, turn the fan switch to 'ON' and turn off/on the breaker the heat will come on. It will warm to about 74 before the therm cuts the heat off and then it must cool to around 65 before the heat comes back on. The fan blows cool air until that happens.

If I put the fan switch back in 'AUTO' at any time the fan will shut off and nothing works until turning the fan 'ON' and resetting the breaker. Then the heat will work again.

It seems to me that the auxillary heat is the only thing that is working and the primary heat is what controls the fan cycles in 'AUTO' setting since the fan will not come on in 'AUTO'. What could cause this? Please help I would like to have an idea of what is wrong so I don't get railroaded by my local service tech about a new system. 5987 Posts Posted -: 8:24:18 PM Are you using the Lennox AM30 air handler with the HM30?

It is under the house and though I am not positive I am pretty sure it is. Is this a dual heat system? The wiring for the thermostat is as follows: On the 17G1701 thermostat.

The fan control module is located in the AM30 and has a bank of relays that are notorious for sticking and locking up. I am attaching a service manual for the HM30 when using the AM30. Pay attention to pages 39 thru 44. You must realize that Lennox no longer supports their Complete Heat equipment.

It is important to work closely with you local Lennox technician to learn more about any possible recalls or replacement policies that may be in place. Not all HM30 are potential issues, yours could be just fine and last for years to come. A knowledgeable and skilled technician can be invaluable to you when it comes to this equipment. I have found that you may need to call around and ask key questions to find the appropriate service company.

Be up front with the company that you have a Complete Heat set-up. To many times homeowners assume that they have a basic heater issue and call any furnace company out. You need someone with the right tools and experience to properly adjust and diagnosis a Complete Heat. A serviceman with both boiler/hydronic/and Lennox forced air experience would be perfect, but very hard to find.

Try in the top right hand corner is a find dealer locator. This will help locate a competent technician. As a Lennox Technician I feel basic repairs and maintenance can be performed by the homeowner. But I highly suggest that periodic maintenance should be made by a certified licensed technician.

You should contact your local Lennox technician for any repairs or issues that are outside your comfort zone. Property damage, personal injury, and death can occur from improperly repaired or maintained systems. Replacing a part doesn't always resolve the issue that caused the part to fail! Overview of HM30 Before being discontinued, the Lennox HM30 furnace was part of the Lennox Complete Heat System: a high-efficiency system for heating both water and rooms. The HM30 is the water heating module that can be installed with the AM30 air module as a close-coupled unit or separately as a remote unit. The Complete Heat System is built with a stainless steel heat exchanger inside its water storage tank. It heats the surrounding water to the programmed temperature, and that hot water can then be diverted for use throughout the house.

The other half of the Complete Heat System involves the AM30 water circulating pump. The AM30 pulls water from the HM30 heating module into the aluminum and copper space heating coil. The coil absorbs heat from the water and then warms the air forced over it by a blower. The warm air is then circulated through the home via ductwork. Meanwhile, water is returned to the HM30 for reheating. Installed new in 1999 after being represented as the best available. I was told I had a cracked tank by one tech after 9 years, and told that was not the case by another.

I've had all the typical problems through the years that are well documented in the forums. Now it is out of warranty. The Lennox regional rep just doesn't want to deal with it. There's a total lack of integrity from Lennox on down. I, too, am a service business owner; the difference being, I have never buried my head in the sand, pretending that a problem does not exist, nor have I ever put my employees in a position to have their integrity questioned. I could not speak more poorly of Lennox and their reps! Date created: 2010-02-28 Worst piece of crap furnace!!!

This early model hm30 is nothing but trouble. I have been in this house since 2002, and every year I have to spend about $500 to repair and replace parts for this obviously poorly designed piece of crap. I will never own a Lennox product even if the newer furnaces don't have the problems the hm30 has. I have never been so thoroughly disappointed and disgusted with any product as I have with this furnace/hot water heater system.

Even the Lennox serviceman said 'get rid of it!' Date created: 2009-03-27 HM30 Pice of crap!

I will never, ever purchase another Lennox product, even if the new ones are better than the very poorly thought out hm30 Complete Heat I have in my house. I bought the house in fall of 2002. The hm30 had been installed in June 95. EVERY single year I have had a failure of $500 or more with this peice of crap. Now today, I have yet another $477 bill for a simple flow pump on the heat coil, that jammed because the plastic impeller broke apart. The impeller cannot be replaced, only the entire pump. What should be a $10 impeller is permanently attached to the $375+ pump.

I have had a water tank failure, another flow pump failure, copper corrosion problems, a relay failed on the control board (which of course means a WHOLE new control board, there is corrosion on every steel, metal, aluminum and die cast part in the burner area of the water tank. Yet with every failure, the local Lennox shop has the part in stock! Even the stainless steel water tank! If you have a Lennox HM30 in your house, GET RID OF IT as soon as you can. Even one of the Lennox repairmen said if it was his house, he'd get rid of it! I have a form from Lennox to file a complaint.

Date created: 2009-03-03 My Worst Nightmare This Lennox hm30 Complete Heat system has cost me over $6,498 in repairs over the past 9 years and now it is irrepairable. I have replaced a thermistor, a pump, a valve, a thermostat, combustion blowers x2, a gas valve, an electrode, a control board, a regulator, a combustion air orifice, and a tank. It broke down while we were gone and the pipes froze and cracked costing me another $1000 in repairs. Now Lennox offers me just $1800 toward the replacement system which costs $3000. We have gone without heat and hot water for many days and paid for the equivalent of a new system. This is unbelievable! Other HM30 Reviews The Lennox Complete Heat System using the HM30 heating module has a history of poor reviews.

Repeated cracks and leaks within the system resulted in the discontinuation of the product. In fact, the HM30’s reoccurrence of leaks prompted a Lennox Industries Inc.

To issue a letter to homeowners in 2003, acknowledging the problems and explaining terms of coverage, repairs and/or replacements. The letter urges homeowners to talk with their Lennox dealer about repair and/or replacement issues. A Lennox dealer reports on www.hvac-talk.com that Lennox has continued to help homeowners with HM30 systems still under warranty by removing and replacing the units if or when problems arise. One such replacement used in the event of an HM30 failure under warranty is the HM61 CompleteHeat system. However, systems out of the warranty limits have no guarantee of replacement, the poster points out.
