Dan mostly covered it except the tires. Tkc80’s are great tires for a dual sport. No, they’re not GNCC or Harescramble tires.

But they offer a great balance of mixed surface tagged dual sport riding which is what most guys probably use the 500 for. If you immediately need a different tire you may have bought the wrong bike. When the ride is a couple hundred mile days, which include pavement twisters, gravel roads, and single track in equal measure there’s really not a better tire for all of those purposes. Click to expand. If you want a XC-W four-stroke, then you literally have no other choice now. A lot of people want the XC, but with the 6-speed wide-ratio, flywheel weight, and the Xplor/PDS suspension - but they don't care for it being street legal.

These bikes (250/350/500 EXC-F) are awesome, and with few tweaks can be almost all things to most people. But a Honda XR650L it is not. It is first and foremost a hardcore, high performance dirt bike. 50/50 dual sport tires don't belong on it, and are only there to hit a sound limit.

The previous bikes didn't have them, and even the 690 still doesn't. But tires are the easiest thing to change, so not a big deal. Regarding tires yes the stock tires are round, black and have knobbies.

I had them on my 990 for awhile. Are they as good as the Goldentyre 723 and 216 I had put on before my 500 left the show room? No F@#.ing way! I kept my TKCs in case I do some weird road trip where off road traction is less important.
