Parole Officer Trainee Test Guidelines

Parole Officers are responsible for providing public safety and community protection, while working with community-based organizations to deliver needed services and supervision to releasees. Parole Officers perform both social work and law enforcement functions. Offender Rehabilitation Coordinators work in the correctional facilities throughout New York State preparing inmates for consideration for release by the Parole Board.

Offender Rehabilitation Coordinators work with inmates to prepare for their appearance before the Board of Parole, perform inmate release planning and coordinate with community-based parole staff in developing final discharge and supervision plans. Appointments to these positions may only be made from among those persons who have qualified for appointment by taking a Parole Officer or Parole Officer Trainee Civil Service examination. Offender Rehabilitation Coordinators and Offender Rehabilitation Coordinator Trainee positions are filled from the Parole Officer and Parole Officer Trainee examination lists, respectively. Examinations are held approximately every four years and are open to individuals with the minimum qualifications listed below. Currently, there is no Parole Officer examination scheduled. Parole Officer: Bachelor's Degree and three years experience as a social worker or group worker in a recognized social service, correctional, criminal justice, community or human welfare agency. Parole Officer Trainee: Bachelor's Degree or higher degree in sociology, psychology, social work, counseling, criminal justice, rehabilitation counseling, American studies with concentration in Native American studies, or in Black, Asian Pacific Islander, Hispanic cultural studies, or Latin American/Caribbean studies; or a law degree.

In certain instances an individual already employed by New York State may qualify for transfer. Parole Officers are public officers. They must be residents of the State of New York, citizens of the United States and at least 21 years of age. Candidates must have a valid New York State driver's license and meet physical, medical, psychological and background investigation screening requirements for appointment.
